quotations
Abandon the search for truth. Settle for a good fantasy.
-Anonymous, and why I write and read

There is no such thing as a moral or an immoral book. Books are well written, or badly written. That is all.
-Oscar Wilde, and why I read what I read

All happy families resemble each other, each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.
-Leo Tolstoy, and why I write what I write

It is impossible to enjoy idling thoroughly unless one has plenty of work to do.
-Jerome K. Jerome, and why I love the fandom as much as I do

black
The light by your bed burns brightly, and in the silence of the room you flip the page of a book, but the black ink bleeds into the paper and the lines blur into meaningless jumble.

You stop to rub your temples and you fetch another cup of tea.

You sip, and the aroma nudges your senses awake, so you resume waiting for him to come home, with alcohol in his breath and the marks of other men on his skin. You open the book.

Nothing still makes sense.

It is late, and you are as blind as the night.

As of August 1, 2011, my fics can be found at my Dreamwidth account here. I'm mixing them in with personal posts, but the character and fic tags should help sort the rest out.

Fics | Ficlets | Drabbles | Other Fandoms

( Fics ahoy! )

I'll no longer be updated this journal though anything posted before August 1, 2011 can still be found here, and the tags remain alive here.

As always, feedback of any sort is always appreciated, even if it may be years behind. Happy reading! ♥

Title: Unsettled
Fandom: Harry Potter
Pairing: Theodore/Susan, Theodore/Daphne, a dash of Oliver/Katie
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: ~3100
Summary: The war is over, but it doesn't feel like it's truly ended.
Additional Notes: Written for the community at [info]hp_spring_fling. Many, many thanks to my beta, Ashvarden, who helped shape and prod this into readable form. The request I had asked for a tone more somber than I was used to writing, and this had been an interesting exercise in restraint versus... whatever its opposite was. Erm. So yeah.

The Nott Manor had never been one to inspire feelings of cheer and fuzziness. )

Title: How I Married Your Mother
Fandom: Harry Potter
Pairing: Draco/Astoria, some Theodore/Daphne, Blaise/Pansy, Roger/Astoria
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: ~7500
Summary: When Daphne and Theodore get engaged, making sure Astoria follows through with maid-of-honor duties becomes the best man's responsibility. But aiding and abetting was hardly what Draco signed up for.
Additional Notes: Written for [info]hp_canon_fest for the prompt "Asteria is a criminal mastermind, Draco is her reluctant sidekick. The crime in question could be the heist of the century or something as simple as stealing an apple. Means, motivation, success up to the author." Original posting can be found here, although in this version I switched the spelling back to Astoria. My betas [info]carlyinrome and [info]todaythesamesky did rock star stuff for me! Any further mistakes are mine post-beta. Also, the shameless allusion to a popular prime time TV show sort of extends past the title.

This is the story of how I married your mother. )

Title: The Things They Don't Tell You
Fandom: Harry Potter
Pairing: Percy/Oliver
Rating: NC-17
Word Count: ~3500
Summary: You had a plan, a path, a purpose, but nobody told you things didn't always work out to your liking.
Additional Notes: Way belated post, but I figured it better be in here for archiving purposes. I wrote this last year for [info]margottenenbaum for [info]hp_yule_balls fest. Never written this pairing before, I don't think. I kinda liked how it turned out.

Fandom: Harry Potter
Pairing: Roger/Katie
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: 2200~
Summary: Katie's job demands a lot from her, but when it comes to Roger Davies, it can sometimes mean things that aren't even included in the fine print.
Additional Notes: Written for [info]purelush as a pinch-hit for the first [info]clever_claws fest. First posted here. Much thanks to [info]hockeysaurus for the beta.

Title: Do You Believe in Snorkacks?
Fandom: Harry Potter
Author-turned-pseudo-artist: [info]slumber
Pairing: Luna/Hermione
Rating: PG13
Medium: Colored markers
Summary: "You'll need to be very, very quiet, or else the crumple-horned snorkacks will take more than your shoes."
Additional Notes: Drawn for [info]hpsauce at [info]hp_april_fools over at IJ. Started out completely different (and much more detailed) in my head but lack of art materials, proper scanning tools, Photoshop skills, and actual artistic ability produced this instead. LOL. Whatever. There are skirts involved, and ties, too, so I am happy. Originally posted here.

Title: Salvation by Slytherin
Author: [info]slumber
Rating: NC-17
Word Count: ~8,700
Warnings: Nothing, really. Plot, probably, and a disappointing lack of darkness.
Summary: All Terry Boot wants to do is author a book and perhaps rewrite history as wizarding society remembers it, but the Slytherins just won't cooperate. When a civil war erupts and Terry's only chance of escape involves working with a poorly-acronymed rebel group and an army of questionable professionals to take down the largest magical empire in the world, is his potential bestseller really worth all the trouble? (Theodore/Blaise, Draco/Terry, shades of Draco/Theodore.)
Disclaimers: If I owned Harry Potter, it wouldn't be about Harry Potter. Made up facts and figures derived from actual facts and figures found in Wikipedia.
Notes: Though the Slytherins were nowhere in the Battle of Hogwarts in the book, JKR has stated in later interviews that they were, so I've taken that for fact. This was written for [info]mr_mercutio during the recently concluded [info]hpvalensmut, originally posted here. Much thanks and love to [info]ccharlotte for the beta.

Title: Un Crimine in Tre Atti (A Crime in Three Acts)
Fandom: Harry Potter (barely :|)
Pairing: Roger/Blaise (hints of Blaise/Theodore)
Rating: R
Word Count: 350 words
Summary: Il Seduzione. La Relazione. Il Tradimento.
Additional Notes: Because things sound better in another language, hee. Written for [info]ccharlotte, though most of the inspiration for it came from her too. :P Happy Birthday! Here's to more random plotting, Roger and Blaise, growing old!, and eee, graduating and grad school! (See you in August! :D:D:D)

Atto I: Il Seduzione

It starts with a playful comment, like it always does. It follows through with a wink here, another smirk there, like it always has. But his eyes linger a second longer and you catch him then, and where you would not have pushed, you do.

(Cat-got-the-mouse grin, voice lowered to a murmur.) "Like what you see?"

Where he might have backed out, he doesn't.

(Tongue wetting full lips.) "Maybe."

Where you meant to keep your distance, you don't.

(Hips now dangerously close, lips moving against his ear.) "But you do, don't you?"

Where he would have said no--

(The softest, traitorous hitch of breath.) "Goddammit, Roger."

He doesn't.

The rest here. )

Additional Notes: Written for [info]chaosraven for the [info]weissday challenge/fest here, this is (and will remain to be) my only venture into the Weiss Kreuz fandom, which is quite tragic, because I don't even ship brad/ken. :\

Title: The First Christmas
Pairing: Percy/Hermione
Rating: G
Word Count: 212
Summary: Snow covered the remnants of the night's battle.
Additional Notes: Pinch-hit for [info]hp_kris_kringle.

They barely celebrated Christmas in the last few years, not when green meant the Dark Mark hanging high over recently attacked houses and villages or the third Unforgiveable hitting an innocent, not when red meant spilled blood of men and women who stood to fight the Dark Lord's army and lost.

Last night had been the last battle, where Harry had faced Lord Voldemort, and the Aurors and the Order had finally banded together against the Death Eaters, and the night was nearly a deadly parody of Christmas-lit towns, the sky illuminated in the green and red of curses.

Morning came, and all was quiet.

"Percy?" Hermione called out tentatively, stumbling over bodies and shaking as she drew her coat tighter around her body.

"Right here," a voice replied from behind her, hoarse and weak from casting one curse too many. She turned at once, running toward Percy, who clung tight to her.

"I thought--I didn't see--I was worried--" she stammered helplessly, fingers curled against his rumpled clothes and voice nearly breaking.

"It's alright, I'm here," he murmured, stroking her back soothingly just as the first snowflakes fell from the sky. "We're safe."

Snow covered the remnants of the night's battle, and it was the first Christmas in a long time that stayed as purely white as the season.

Title: Festive
Pairing: Ron/Hermione
Rating: G
Word Count: 128
Summary: Hermione happens to like the Weasley jumpers.
Additional Notes: Pinch-hit for [info]hp_kris_kringle.

As was customary in the Weasley household, that year each child received their own knitted jumper from Mrs Weasley. As was customary, she made sure each jumper went to its intended recipient by the large, obnoxious letter embroidered on the front. And as was customary, she picked an especially horrendous colour for Ron.

"Puke green," he announced with resignation, shrugging it on because of course, as was customary, Mrs Weasley wanted pictures.

"It's called olive green, Ron," Hermione told him.

"Puked out olive green."

"Ron."

"What?"

"I like the colour on you," Hermione said, cheeks turning a shade of red that had been customarily associated with the Weasleys.

"You think so?" Ron asked, perking up slightly.

Hermione's lips curled up, leaning in a little, her own bright red Weasley jumper brushing against Ron's. "It's very.. festive," she murmured, just close enough to feel Ron grin against her lips.

Rating: PG13
Word Count: 710 words
Summary: Roger Davies and his various love interests. :|
Additional Notes: Part of the [info]fanfic100 challenge, for the prompt Heart, I suppose. (In retrospect, I should probably have signed up for Roger Davies instead of Ravenclaws.) Written for [info]ccharlotte.

Title: Stages
Fandom: Queer as Folk
Pairing: Canon
Rating: PG?
Word Count: 250 words
Summary: Michael's family is dying.
Additional Notes: [info]ccharlotte was reading too many cancer!Brian fics. There's a logical connection there somewhere, I'm sure. :|

Michael's family is dying.

He doesn't think about it very often, though, if at all, because Ben works out, Hunter still outruns him by a mile, and they finished Liberty Ride together.

It's a thought that startles him when Hunter complains about the winter cold or Ben sneezes, and then he thinks about it, but only for a while.

Because when Michael imagines the future he sees him and Ben with white hair and grandchildren.

*

Michael's family is dying.

There was a draft in the apartment and nobody remembers anymore who left the window open, but three days in and Hunter's caught a cold.

"Here, take some vitamins," Michael says.

"Have some water."

"Orange juice?"

He breaks down with a fever, and it isn't just the flu anymore.

Ben catches it too.

"We'll be fine," he tells Michael, and Michael asks the doctor if he has a stronger prescription to give.

*

Michael's family is dying.

The doctor asks to talk to Michael in private, and when he comes out he heads straight to Brian's apartment.

"Fuck them," Brian says, arm slung around him as they both lay amid broken furniture. "We're all the family we fucking need."

Michael's lips are tight and he takes another joint, knuckles shaking and bleeding. He breathes it in deep and holds it until it burns like fucking hell.

"Fuck them," he lies.

*

Michael's family is dying, and nobody knows what to say.

He locks himself in a room, shooting down hugs or offers of kind words with a deadened look in his eyes.

Even Brian says nothing.

*

Michael's family is dead.

Title: Gentler Kisses
Fandom: Harry Potter
Pairing: Vague, but let's put it at Ravenclaws, although it could work with another pairing I like.
Rating: PG
Word Count: 150 words--me and my love affair with the exact
Summary: There were gentler kisses now.
Additional Notes: For the [info]fanfic100 challenge, for the prompt Taste. I haven't written properly in ages so this is a little. Meh. Unexpected, I guess. I was trying to write something else.

There were kisses that burned his lips and marked his skin long after they first claimed him territory. There were kisses that haunted him long after they'd gone, kisses from a wide-eyed boy with messy hair and goofy grins, now a lonely boy with delicate wrists and soft lips and kisses that lingered. There were kisses that he remembered, kisses that he missed, kisses from the boy he loved who thought love wasn't enough.

There were kisses he learned to forget, kisses he learned to replace with kind smiles and shy hellos, hesitant pauses that eased back into years of friendship and light banter with the same wide-eyed boy who kissed his heart to pieces.

There were gentler kisses now because they meant nothing and, in being so, broke nothing. They were too fragile to break anymore, the boys and their kisses.

But one kiss might have made them whole.

Title: Under the Mistletoe
Pairing: Tom/Bellatrix
Rating: G
Word Count: 108
Summary: Be careful who you find yourself under the mistletoe with.
Additional Notes: Pinch-hit for [info]hp_kris_kringle.

When her sisters giggled over who they’d kissed under the mistletoe, Bellatrix kept quiet, choosing vicious red dress robes and a delicate necklace, for she was to meet Rodolphus Lestrange at that night’s party.

“Hurry up, children,” she said. “And I’d be careful who I find myself with under it.”

But she hadn’t been careful. Before the Lestranges arrived, she looked up to where the mistletoe was and saw it directly above her.

“Fascinating, isn’t it?” a voice murmured from behind her. She turned to a handsome man with a charming grin. “I don’t think we’ve met. I’m Tom Riddle.”

It was almost too late before they remembered, wrapped in each other’s arms under dirty too-thin sheets inside cramped quarters. Time always stopped for war. Her face was bloody and his chest heaved from where his rib had fractured his lungs.

“Hey, Hermione?” he asked, voice raspy.

“Yes?” She clung onto him, cradling him against her chest.

“Happy Christmas.”

Additional Notes: Pinch-hit for [info]hp_kris_kringle.

Ernie visited Hannah for the holidays for their Muggle Studies project. He’d spent the time packing and preparing for the few days he’d be staying over by filling his bag with as much Muggle clothing as he thought suitable, to which Hannah had giggled at his Classic Tweed Collection and brought out her brother’s jeans and shirts to wear.

“Here, put on a coat, we’ll go caroling,” she told him cheerfully.

Ernie frowned. “We sing Christmas carols too, how is it different here?”

Hannah grinned. “It isn’t, that’s sort of part of the point, isn’t it?”

And she was right.

Title: Christmas Shopping

Rating: G
Word Count: 102
Summary: Molly and Arthur have a friendly competition every Christmas-time.
Additional Notes: Pinch-hit for [info]hp_kris_kringle.

Molly and Arthur always did Christmas shopping together, and though most would assume that shopping (mostly for jumper colour combinations) for seven children would be the worst bit (Molly faffed between colours for hours before choosing a completely different one), the trickiest part actually comes in when they try to buy the other’s present and not let the other realise it.

“I’ll just, er, go to the loo, Molly,” Arthur said, taking a few steps back.

“Sure, dear,” Molly replied, smiling knowingly, taking out a tally and marking it down.

Arthur really needed to do something about his losing streak.

Additional Notes: Written as a pinch-hit for [info]hp_kris_kringle.

Few people stayed at Hogwarts that Christmas, which isn’t entirely surprising. The parents had been terrified about the news of Black’s escape and the rumours that he’d managed to penetrate even the walls of Hogwarts, and had insisted their children come home.

Some, however, still stayed over.

“Oh, Father believes that whole thing’s hogwash,” Luna told him when he asked, right after she’d sat primly beside him and wished him a merry Christmas. “He’s trying to expose the Minister’s heliopath army. Professor?”

Remus blinked. “Yes?”

“You’d better move away, you’re right under a mistletoe and the nargles can be vicious.”

It broke Ronald Weasley’s heart to admit it, but his girlfriend was honestly was not perfect. She was a little bossy, her hair had worse days more than it had good, and she can never, no matter what, carry a tune.

“Hermione?” he asked, cringing slightly as Hermione tried to reach a note that had seemed not only to be one octave higher than she’d been going for, but also about three notes off.

“I’ll get it, it just takes a bit of time and patience,” she said with a huff.

“What, swish and flick?” Ron asked, snorting.

Hermione glared.

For Christmas that year Pansy had given Draco a present for a night out on Muggle London, providing them with dinner reservations at a classy restaurant as well as luxury accommodations for the night. Her note had instructed Draco to introduce his 'companion' to culture and that she still did not quite approve.

Ron had been stunned.

"Close your mouth, Weasley, unless you’d like to put it to better uses," Draco smirked, tugging his companion to the bed of their hotel room and hoping Pansy forgives him for ignoring dinner reservations, and the socks Ron thought fit to get her.

Title: Ava Adore
Fandom: Harry Potter
Pairing: Harry/Ginny
Rating: PG
Word Count: 200
Summary: Harry and Ginny are in love, but. Post-war.
Additional Notes: Again, written for [info]xylodemon's I Didn't Get to Go to TWH Ficlet-a-thon. For [info]saphreanth, who prompted with Harry/Ginny. Post-war, but dark. They are both definitely in love with one another, but still, dark. Prompt: lovely girl, you're the murder in my world (from the song Ava Adore by The Smashing Pumpkins). Thanks also goes to [info]siobhanohare, who laughed at me when my word count went from 58 to 74 in thirty minutes. :|

Sometimes she’d like to believe in fairy tales, like she did when she was so much younger. Sometimes she wished that a boy’s smile and the flutter of a girl’s heart set everything right. Sometimes she wanted to close her eyes and open them to white picket fences and sun-dappled gardens and his smile. Her blush. Everything right.

He deserved to be surrounded by his friends, not haunted by their memories.

In a quiet moment he finds her in the kitchen, humming to herself. He stands behind her, hand resting comfortably on her stomach as he kisses her good morning. She leans back against him and he smiles. She blushes. And everything’s right.
